Hey Plant Peeps!

April showers bring May flowers or in our case, succulents!

Spring is in full swing with this month’s collection of plants. I thought I’d switch up this month and add a mimicry plant to your collection.

First up is Stomatium Mustellinum. This is a clumping species of bumpy green-blue leaves lined with what looks like tiny little teeth. This variety does really well in cultivation and tends to bloom in spring and summer. It has fragrant, yellow flowers that boast lots of tiny petals and open from late afternoon to midnight. Its petit stature is perfect for mini or fairy gardens.

Next up is senecio Jacobseii, commonly known as trailing jade. And although it bears the name “jade”, it is, in fact, unrelated to the crassula family. For me, this is one of my go to “spillers” for succulent arrangements. With its dense thick stems that can reach up to 4”, it’s a perfect cascading plant. Moderate sun stress can liven up their color turning them from a light lilac blush to a bright magenta.

Rounding out the succulents this month is a sweet Graptoveria Superbum. These particular plants have been in their pots for a hot minute as evidenced by their thick stems.  If your plant doesn’t already have some new starts growing on it, it will soon! This graptoveria can grow to be up into 5” in diameter and will flower pale yellow flowers in early spring. The foliage is covered in a protective dusty powder called farina that serves as a sunblock of sorts for the plant, so do handle with care. Avoid using neem oil around plants with farina, as it will permanently damage that coating.

Our April box is complete with our air plant addition of Tillandsia Albida MinorThis gorgeous white/silvery plant is a prolific grower that likes bright light conditions. New shoots typically grow along the stem and can become a cluster quickly. It sports cream flowers from a deep crimson flower spike, which is uncommon for air plants. Keep them hydrated as spring temps turn into summer.

I hope you enjoy this month’s collection as we shed these short winter days for  long sunny ones. As always, Happy Planting!!!

Sonja & Isaac
